Inviting creamy, mealy aroma with a touch of spice. Ripe fruits, lemon, clementine and greengage, as well as a deep creamy richness on the palate. Rich but fresh, deep and long. Quite powerful but very well balanced though you do feel the alcohol a little on the finish except when you chill it right down. Very nice use of oak to give texture rather than oak flavour. Even better on the second day. Decant? Very satisfying chewy finish. 17/20 Julia Harding MW of jancisrobinson.com
Ben’s Notes – When I talk about a stock of luck, I talk about meeting Gerhard! These days there aren’t many wine makers in the Hemel valley (the home of some of the best Chardonnay and Pinot) but I met Gerhard who works with working with JC at Creation. He’s been given the opportunity to make his own wine as side projects. This Chardonnay meets all the right ‘creator’ you would hope for and then a touch of wildness thrown in. Lightly curried fish dish or bold roast chicken dinner will see you right here.
The grapes are from the Hemel en Aarde Valley in the Walker Bay, just 5km from Atlantic Ocean. Grapes are hand picked and chilled overnight before processing. 100% Whole bunch pressed to stainless steel tank for overnight settling. Racked to older French oak the following day to undergo spontaneous fermentation. MLF in barrel and then left on gross lees for the duration of 10 months.
Only 2 barrels produced. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, while additives are limited to a small addition of sulphur prior to bottling. A harmless sediment may develop over time. This wine shows typical Hemel en Aarde minerality, a lovely lemon curd citrus element and textural weight on the palate. The oak is supportive, but never dominant. Bright acidity layered in supple texture and lashings of fruit weight, this wine drinks superbly now and should age well for another 5 years.
Produced by Gerhard as his own project, while still part of the Creation winemaking team. In honour of his grandfather Kat, a true gentleman, a man’s man with a fair moustache.
