Very grassy, nettly aroma, sugar snap and green fig. Packed with methoxypyrazines. Capsicum and citrus on the palate, intensely grassy and green fig, reminding me of the style of Steenberg Sauvignon from Constantia, a style that I have not found outside of South Africa. I wonder if there is a touch of residual sugar here, even if it is only 3–4 g/l, or is it just fruit sweetness? Either way, there is a slight sweet-sour effect on the finish, hence the minus. The oak influence is barely noticeable except in a fullness on the palate, intense and long while still fresh. 17-/20 Julia Harding MW of jancisrobinson.com
Ben’s Notes – New World Sauvignon Blanc has been put in a strange place of cheap and cheerful, easy drinking and ‘un-complex’. Well, while there is a big market for that sort of thing, this wine does not fit in that world. This is a grown ups wine – Sauvignon with sophistication – a serious wine from a lady that’s serious about her winemaking. We are so pleased that we can bring Erika Obermeyer’s wines to the UK. Platter’s Wine Guide awarded her Newcomer of the Year 2019.
Partly wooded (70% unoaked fermented in Stainless Steel tanks, 30% fermented and matured for 5 months in 1st and 2nd fill 500-litre French 0ak barrels).
Fruit is from a dry land farmed 20-year-old vineyard in Groenekloof, Darling, planted on deep red Hutton soils. This region is particularly well-suited for producing outstanding Sauvignon Blanc. It enjoys a maritime climate and is heavily influenced by the Atlantic Ocean just a few kilometers to the west. Misty and cool mornings are followed by warmer daytime temperatures and cooling afternoon breezes that bring relief and refreshment to the grapes.
An elegant Sauvignon with concentrated fruit purity, this wine has a superbly complex nose featuring a floral top note followed by blackcurrant, passion fruit, lime and grapefruit interspersed with subtle notes of fynbos. The palate is generous with broad layers of flavours. A vibrant acidity lends balance while the finish is long and savoury. Impressive structure and intensity with the ageing potential of a cool climate Sauvignon Blanc.
