Description
Nothing to do with Bruce Willis, sadly. This Cabernet Sauvignon – the first wine released under the new Die Hart label – is from the cool Walker Bay on the southern coast and was made by Niels and Alice Verburg of Luddite fame.
You may not know, but Ex Animo means ‘from the heart’ in Latin – and we believe that beyond skill and artistry (which are both vital), passion is what really sets great wines apart. ‘Die Hart’ is an extension of that and means the heart in Afrikaans.
Dave Clarke, the owner of Ex Animo, explains – ‘We love Cabernet Sauvignon, but over the last decades have grown both frustrated and bored by the countless examples of Cabernet that rely on a seemingly clinical blend of fruit weight, sweetness and oak. We longed for a wine that championed the more refreshing (some may say herbal) and hereditary aspects of Cabernet Sauvignon.
We asked Niels and Alice to create a wine that is quintessentially Cabernet Sauvignon, and they didn’t disappoint.’
2018 Vintage
The growing season for vintage 2018 was dry but not as hot as 2016. This enabled the Verburgs to harvest the fruit for this wine free from disease and at a good ripeness while avoiding heavy, jammy characters.
It has a typical Cabernet Sauvignon palate of blackcurrant, herbs, and surprisingly (as there is 0% new oak), cedar. Fine-grained and persistent tannin {fruit-derived) is a hallmark.
Alcohol: 14.5%
