Named after Franco Lourens’ dad, whose image appears on the label, Howard John is a separately fermented blend. Dry farmed and fermented with a high proportion of whole bunches, it’s pale, savoury and spicy with racy red cherry and pomegranate fruit. 92/100 Tim Atkin MW 2021-25
This Red blend of Grenache Noir, Cinsault. Syrah and Carignan comes from Chris Alheit’s assistant wine maker Franco Lourens.
43% Grenache Noir – Swartland
32% Cinsault – Darling (44 years old bush vines)
14% Syrah – Swartland
11% Carignan – Wellington (40-year-old bush vines).
No yeast, acid, enzymes or fining agents are added. The wine is matured for 10 months in old french barrels. All the grapes are from dry land bush vines.
