Well, it’s not really a ‘club’. Here is the place we will make available ‘vertical sets’ of a minimum of 4 vintages of wine we think are worth having – and drinking. Like everything else on the site, quantities are always limited. When they are gone – they are gone. First off, Ian Naudé.
Ben and I visited Ian in January and were treated to a ‘blind’ tasting of 5 vintages of his legendary white blends. They turned out to be 2006 – 2010. Also present was a well respected German sommelier.
Semillon, Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc make up the blends but in varying quantities each vintage. Ian is a master blender and when he blends, the room is probably not dissimilar to the laboratory of a mad scientist. However, there’s no madness here – just genius at work – enthusiasm and a lot of fun. Ian is such a great guy to be around.
I think the first bottle we tasted was a revelation. “How old do you think this one is?” Ian asked the som with a twinkle in his eye. It’s a shame I can’t write his response in a German accent. “Hmmm … maybe 2013-2014. It’s still very young and fresh.” In fact it was the 2006. We were all gobsmacked. Ben and I knew we were going to buy some for the site as soon as possible.
Of course all the wines taste different due to the varying mixes of the varietals. To our minds the mix of freshness and complexity is delightful. If you can resist drinking them now, they will still continue to age well. So, if you’re looking for a traditional vertical, then this is not for you. But if you’re looking for a Naudé treat that reflects Ian’s passion, terroir and all the elements that make really good wine, buy now! – Joff Day
There are a limited number of bottles from each of the 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 vintages remaining. This makes up the first set of wines in our ‘Vertical Club’.
